Angelina undergoes double mastectomy over breast cancer fears

Angelina Jolie has revealed that she had a double mastectomy, as she feared that she would develop breast cancer.

The 37-year-old actress said that genetic tests found that she had an 87 percent chance of acquiring breast cancer and a 50 percent risk of ovarian cancer.

Jolie said that the procedures to have both of her breasts removed began on February, and insisted that her chance of contracting breast cancer is now reduced to five percent, the Sun reported.

The Hollywood star wrote in the New York Times on Tuesday that her mom Marcheline Bertrand fought cancer for almost a decade and died at the age of 56.

Jolie said that she wrote about it, as she hopes that other women can benefit from her experience.

She also praised Pitt for his support throughout the process that she said brought their family closer.
